INDIGENOUS NIAGARA LIVING MUSEUM TOURS
Inaugural Tour Scheduled for Sunday, September 26, 2021 was cancelled. We will be rescheduling the Inaugural Tour for Spring 2022 and will be in contact with everyone who previously booked.
In partnership with Celebration of Nations and the FirstOntario Performing Arts Centre, Landscape of Nations 360° produced the Indigenous Niagara Living Museum Tours program as an initiative affiliated with Plenty Canada, which developed The Great Niagara Escarpment Indigenous Cultural Map.
The deep and compelling Indigenous history of the Niagara Region has, heretofore, never been explored as foundation for the development of authentic tours of compelling Indigenous destinations, including historic, cultural, artistic, and natural world locations, including Niagara Falls itself. This unique tour program holds great appeal for all Canadians and peoples around the world. The growth of Indigenous tourism is accelerating due to unprecedented demand. Indigenous tourism outpaced mainstream tourism with an estimated 23.5% growth in the last seven years. More and more international visitors are seeking authentic cultural and land-based Indigenous experiences. Interest has grown to significant levels, for example, from France (63%), Germany (47%), China (35%), and the United States (33%). These demographics represent a global market consisting of lifelong learners.
In addition to the beautiful vista that is Niagara Falls itself, with its stories of powerful forces and influences upon Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabek identity, Indigenous Niagara Living Museum Tours explore Indigenous history locations associated with the War of 1812 and related Indigenous contributions that both defended and helped to shape the development of Canada; the geology and ecosystems of the Niagara Escarpment; Niagara Gorge timeline detailing longstanding Indigenous inhabitation of the region; spectacular public artworks that memorialise, convey, and commemorate Indigenous culture and history in Niagara Falls, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Queenston, Thorold, St. Catharines, Fort Erie, and much more.
The Indigenous Niagara Living Museum Tours program has been conceptualised as a museum without walls. Rather than one building with all exhibits contained therein, Living Museum Tours transport visitors to multiple locations each offering diverse encounters. These experiences are intended to deepen and build an enlightened and inspired understanding of Indigenous peoples of the Niagara Region who have inhabited Niagara for some 13,000 years.
In addition to physical bus tours, Indigenous Niagara Living Museum Tour destinations are also accessible online for viewing at thegreatniagaraescarpment.ca. From this landing page simply click on ENTER, then click on MENU in the upper right corner, then click on INDIGENOUS NIAGARA TOUR SITES, and begin exploring the destinations by clicking on the blue Pins. After clicking on a blue pin go to MORE INFORMATION and then OPEN MENU in the pop-up dialogue box at the left of the screen. This will reveal a list of text information, photos, resources, and videos. Many of the destination sites contain videos that, when considered together, create a fascinating tour of important Indigenous sites in the Niagara Region.
However, nothing is better than our personal guided bus tours, which feature animated encounters and engagement with Indigenous peoples. You will benefit from the knowledge of our cultural interpreters, historians, food specialists, and artisans who will create meaningful and memorable experiences that will last a lifetime.
